Dry substances are used in the dry scrubber systems which are able to remove acid gases mainly responsible for acid rain. How a dry scrubber works is much the same as how other scrubbers do. In dry scrubbing, they spray the exhaust stream with a collection of dry reagents. With the introduction of these chemicals, a chemical reactions is produced which work in different ways. Depending on the materials that needs to be removed, the chemical reaction takes place. Through chemical reaction, some materials neutralize harmful pollutants in the stream. Another type of chemical reaction turns the material into a different substance. And this newly formed substance is then caught in the particle stream or falls out of the gas stream. When the treated exhaust gases are vented out, they look dark or sometimes are invisible since there is no vapors added in the process. The main use of dry scrubbers is to remove acid gases from combustion sources. The process of dry scrubbing is done by spraying dry reactants to exhaust gas at very high speeds. The pollutants are neutralized in the gas with this process. This is done is several steps. First is the cooling of the gas. Then the reagent is injected, and then it is filtered.

The evaporative cooler is used to dilute the exhaust gas. The reagent is then injected when the gas is cooled. In this step the harmful components of the gas are removed. If a dry reagent has neutralizing properties, then it is chosen as a component of the dry reagent mixture. Sodium bicarbonate is almost always chosen because of this property. The different kinds of powders which are mixed together are then injected at high pressures into the exhaust gas. The injection of the dry reagents causes chemical reactions and this results in the lessening of the gas acidity and the removal of harmful pollutants. Finally the cleaned gas goes out of the scrubbing chamber while the scrubbing powder that was used is filterer using a fabric filter. The used scrubbing powder can be reused for dry scrubbing after being cleansed. It cannot be used over and over and it has to be disposed of frequently since proper cleaning is not really possible.
